Legal aid is a vital public service that helps individuals and families access legal support when they need it most. However, years of underinvestment have made legal aid increasingly difficult to access for many people across the UK.
The Law Society’s “Legal Aid Means” campaign highlights growing concerns around the sustainability of family legal aid services and the long-term impact this may have on survivors, children and frontline support organisations.
As access to legal aid becomes more limited, increasing numbers of individuals are being forced to navigate complex and emotionally distressing family court proceedings without legal representation. For domestic abuse survivors, this can create additional barriers at an already traumatic and high-risk time.
Why Early Legal Support Matters
At Domestic Abuse Alliance, we see first-hand how early legal intervention can help survivors feel safer sooner.
Through our WEPROTECT referral service, we work alongside police forces, charities, IDVA services and frontline organisations to accelerate access to civil legal support and protection for victim-survivors of domestic abuse.
Previously, the process of accessing legal assistance following a domestic abuse incident could take up to two weeks. WEPROTECT was developed to significantly reduce that timeline and help survivors access specialist legal support more quickly.
Civil legal protections such as Non-Molestation Orders, Occupation Orders, Domestic Abuse Protection Orders and other family court remedies can play a vital role in helping survivors and their children begin to rebuild their lives safely.

Domestic Abuse Alliance has joined other organisations across the sector in supporting collective advocacy efforts linked to the Law Society’s “Legal Aid Means” campaign, raising concerns around access to family legal aid and the importance of ensuring survivors, children, and families in crisis can access timely legal support and protection.
These conversations reflect a shared recognition that access to early legal advice and specialist legal support remains essential for safeguarding survivors, supporting children, and helping families navigate crisis safely.
Ensuring legal aid remains accessible is not only about legal representation – it is also about safeguarding, prevention, recovery and helping people access protection before situations escalate further.
