The statistics surrounding domestic abuse and mental health are stark, particularly during pregnancy, which is a key moment when abuse can begin or escalate:
💡 30% of domestic abuse cases begin during pregnancy (SafeLives).
💡 40-60% of women experiencing abuse are abused during pregnancy (SafeLives).
💡 Women who experience domestic abuse are twice as likely to experience depression (Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA))
That’s why it’s vital that we understand how domestic abuse impacts maternal mental health and the ability to access support.
On World Maternal Mental Health Day, we are proud to announce our ‘imminent arrival’. In collaboration with Domestic Abuse Education and The HR Dept we are launching a new resource for employers, to help managers support employees who may be experiencing domestic abuse during pregnancy. We will also be calling on policymakers to strengthen protections in the workplace for anyone living with abuse.
With thanks to Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse, Refuge, and The For Baby’s Sake Trust for their support behind this work.
Coming soon…due May. Stay tuned!
